How to Backup or Restore Your Quicken Data?

When you want to backup your Quicken files this means that you want to save and secure your economic information like passwords, reports, accounts, and attachments etc.


In this article, we will explain to you to take backup of your records easily in case of computer failure or as a means of moving your data from one computer to another.


Note: A cloud backup is not automatically created to backup your data file. But, in the 2018 release of Quicken version includes 5GB of online storage with DropBox that you can use for backup Quicken data files.

Quicken for Windows


1.Backup in Quicken for Windows:

  • Select on File> Backup and Restore> Backup Quicken File.
  • You will have two options for backing up your data. You can back up to your computer or any external drive (like USB and a Hard Drive) otherwise you can use Dropbox.
  • To help recognize your latest backup, you can put a check next to Add data to the backup file name.
  • Quicken will show the location where your backup will be saved (click change if you want to change this location) along with the name of the backup file.
  • Click Backup now.

2.Backup to the USB thumb drive, CD, DVD, etc.

  • Inject the CD/DVD or attach the flash drive you want to use for your backup.
  • Open Quicken.
  • Click the File > Backup or Restore > Backup Quicken File.
  • Click backup on my computer or hard drive, then if necessary click change where you would like to save your backup.
  • After select Backup now to start the Backup process.

3.Restore Quicken Data

  • Choose the File > Backup and Restore > Restore from Backup File.
  • Choose Restore from your backup,
  • After click Browse.
  • Browse your computer to search the backup file you want to restore. The Quicken backup file takes the extension .QDF-Backup automatically.
  • Elect the file to restore and click to Open then Restore Backup.
  • If you want to Create a copy, you will need to choose a location to save the copy to and you will also need to give the copy a different file name. After naming and selecting the location of the file, click the Save button, after click Yes to open the restored file.
  • If you like to restore a file over the current file, click on the button OK to overwrite the current file then click Yes to open the restored file.

Quicken for Mac

1.Backup in Quicken for Mac:-

  • Click File > Save a Backup Files
  • Choose one place on your Mac to save the data files. otherwise, you can save in any folder.
  • Click on Save. The Quicken backup file will have the extension .quicken2017backup or .quickenbackup.

2.Backup to the USB drive, CD, DVD, etc.

  • Choose a File > Save a Backup
  • Select a place on your Mac to save the file. You can save to a flash drive by selecting it in the “Where” drop-down. It will be available under Devices.
  • Click on Save

3.Restore Quicken data

  • Choose the File > Restore from Backup.
  • Search in your computer or external media to discover the backup file you want to restore. The Quicken backup file has the extension (.quicken2017backup or .quickenbackup).
  • Click the file to restore.
  • Click Choose.
